Guest Speaker: Mary Strom Larson

Mary Strom Larson has been a professor of Communication at Northern Illinois University since 1985, and is author of Watch It! What Parents Need to Know to Raise Media Smart Kids. Her specialty is the study of the impact of the media on children and adolescents. In 1985, "media" essentially meant television. Now it includes the vast array of "screens" kids are exposed to -- educational videos for toddlers, television, video games, Nintendo's Wii system, Facebook pages, all of the other temptations of the internet, and more. She teaches courses in "Media and Society" and "The Media, Children and Adolescents." In addition to writing Watch It! she has presented 26 papers at professional meetings and published 18 articles in scholarly journals on the topic.

She has been featured on National Public Radio's Todd Mundt Show, WIFR television, Christian Science Monitor, Washington Post, First for Women, Chicago Parent, Chicago Southtown Economist, Kansas City Parent and numerous local and regional publications. She appeared at the Chicago Cultural Center with TV Moms June Cleaver, Shirley Partridge, and Joan Nash in a panel titled "From My Little Margie to Murphy Brown: Images of Women on Television." She has also presented "Television and the Adolescent: Issues of Particular Importance to the Medical Community" to Pediatric Interns at the University of Illinois College of Medicine.
